Spain as a ski holiday destination

We all associate Spain with sun and summer, and that’s what we remember it for. However, it is possible to fly to Malaga and from there drive 2 hours up to Sierra Nevada, probably the most famous ski resort in Spain.

The only place I would mention is Sierra Nevada, as it’s a must-visit place if you love skiing. The area has so much to offer and it’s super easy to get there. The ski season is long, stretching from December to May.

It is possible to get a Danish ski instructor, the Danish company snowminds has Danish ski instructors in Sierra Nevada. Therefore, if you have Danish children who need to learn to ski, ask for a Danish ski instructor as it is possible

Spain’s largest ski area

Sierra Nevada is one of the few places in the world where you can have a morning on the beach and then ski later in the day, not many places in the world can do that. The Sierra Nevada ski area has just over 100 kilometers of slopes and 37 lifts to pull you around the area. That’s why the lift pass costs around SEK 1500, because the area is very similar to ski destinations located in France or Austria.

There are 17 chairlifts, 2 T-lifts and 2 good cabin lifts. There are 115 slopes, of which 16 are green, 40 blue, 50 red and 9 black. The lifts open at 9am and close around 5pm. Every Saturday it is possible to go night skiing on the El Rio slope from 19-21:30, try it, it’s a great experience.

The Sierra Nevada ski area is snow-sure, it’s state-of-the-art and the slopes are great. The area is high, in fact the highest point is 3300 meters above sea level. Therefore, the snow is also super delicious, the sun shines an incredible number of days a year here.

There has been a lot of investment in the area over the last few years and therefore there are many new homes in the area, as well as several nice hotels. You can stay in the city for about 500 kr per night. There is ski-in ski-out almost everywhere, otherwise you just have to walk very little to get to skiing. I’m a huge fan of it as you get more time in bed and you get more time on the slopes, win win.

The area is for the whole family, there are good slopes for beginners, those who have skied before will not be bored on the over 100 km of slopes, there are plenty of blue and red slopes. There are few black but excellent off-piste in the area.

Prices in Spain

If you’re in Spain to eat good food and drink a lot of sangaria, it’s possible to get your hands on. You can get lunch in most places for 70-100kr with drinks. There are several places you can get gastronomic experiences, then of course you pay a little more, but it’s not much more.

The lift pass for 6 days in Sierra Nevada costs around 1500 DKK

You can rent skis and boots from around 500 DKK for 6 days.
