Ski holidays in Val Thorens
Val Thorens has to be my favorite ski holiday destination. The area has everything you need as a skier or snowboarder. There are over 600 kilometers of slopes and the lifts are super fast, the town is the highest ski town in Europe. The town is located at an altitude of 2300 meters, which means that their season already starts the last week of November and runs until mid-April.
Aprés-ski in Val Thorens
Young Danes head to Val Thorens to party and hit the great nightclubs, and to visit the 2–3 Aprés-ski spots that kick off up on the slopes. If you haven’t been to La Folie Douce, it’s something you should try: the views are stunning and the music is absolutely wild. I believe both Morten Breum and Kongsted have played there. It’s often packed, and people end up sitting outside because they’re not allowed to let more people in.
There are also great clubs in Val Thorens itself, including Malaysia and Club Summit. They stay open late and usually don’t close until around 04:00–05:00. And then there’s Café Snesko, which is Danish-owned—you’re sure to find plenty of Danes there.
Take a look at the following articles if you’re going to, or are in, Val Thorens:
There are several snowparks in the area around “The Three Valleys”, and you may find yourself queueing because so many people want to hit the jumps. There are also funslopes where you ride through a kind of course. In several places it’s also possible to take a jump and land on an airbag, so you land softly if you don’t get it right the first time.
Ski-in/ski-out in Val Thorens
In Val Thorens, it’s pretty much ski-in/ski-out throughout the whole resort. There are plenty of great shops where you can pick up new ski gear if you need it. There are also lots of places to eat, although dining out in Val Thorens isn’t exactly cheap.
There’s also a centre with a small swimming pool and a hall where you can do sports. You’ll find places to eat as well as shops where you can buy groceries and pick up equipment or clothing. It can be really cosy to head down there one evening and have a look around.
Great places to eat in town
If you’re going out for dinner in Val Thorens, most places are really good. John’s is a Danish-owned restaurant—excellent food at reasonable prices. Jean Sulpice is a Michelin restaurant with 2 stars. There are also plenty of places for pizza and pasta, or a great steak.
A little tip – if you’re craving a great burger and a bit of Danish conversation, head down to the Nortlanders hotel one day when you’re out on the slopes. It’s right in the centre by the piste. The burgers are excellent and great value.
France has many fantastic ski resorts, including – Les Coches – Montchavin, Le Corbier, St. Martin De Belleville and many others.
