Ski holidays La Plagne
La Plagne, located in southeastern France, is known as a fantastic ski area. This rich and detailed look at La Plagne will help you understand why this ski destination is so popular. With 425 km of piste and the link with Les Arcs providing the setting for Paradiski, this area has the whole package.
La Plagne as ski area
La Plagne consists of six high altitude areas (connected by free buses) and four villages with access to the entire Paradiski area.
Paradiski, which has been connected since 2003, includes all the villages of Les Arcs with those of La Plagne and Peisey-Vallandry. This means that no matter where you stay, you have access to the entire Paradiski area, which offers 141 ski lifts, 260 pistes and 425 km of skiable area. Of these 260 pistes, 12 are green, 135 are blue, 77 are red and 37 are black.
La Plagne itself has a total of 132 pistes with 70 blue pistes, 34 red pistes, eight black pistes and nine green pistes. These are easily accessible via a network of 74 ski lifts. The different villages that make up Paradiski all offer something different in terms of skiing, from great areas for beginners to more advanced, technical slopes and some lovely long runs that are inviting for some good carving.
Snow-safe skiing at altitude
Over 70% of the Paradiski ski area is above 2000m, ensuring plenty of snow throughout the season. You can ski from village level at 1250m all the way up to 3250m at the highest point.
Perfect for families and beginners
Paradiski offers a range of areas for beginners, ski-in/ski-out access and free shuttle buses connecting the whole area. Whether you’re new to skiing or an experienced skier, Paradiski offers a great skiing experience for the whole family.
Facilities in La Plagne
There are several snowparks in La Plagne that allow you to perform and learn new tricks, while the off-piste areas allow you to explore more of this beautiful region that not everyone gets to see. There’s also around 80km of cross-country skiing (La Plagne area), a halfpipe and it’s the only resort in France with an Olympic bobsleigh track.
In addition to traditional alpine skiing, Paradiski offers many alternative forms of skiing throughout the area. This includes 186 km of cross-country trails and 40 km of ski touring trails so you can experience the mountain in your own way.
Beginners in La Plagne
La Plagne is a great ski area for beginners on skis or snowboard. There are several beginner areas and it’s easy to progress from green slopes to blue and beyond. La Plagne is well connected with a network of lifts in most of the villages, so even complete beginners can learn to ski before they head out on the mountain and get scared of the sport. With many blue runs leading off the mountain and into the villages, beginners can easily return to their hotel or apartment.
Easily experienced in La Plagne
La Plagne is known as a great area for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Blue and red runs make up 80% of the groomed slopes. With long, winding slopes, La Plagne gives visitors plenty of opportunities to cruise and perfect their parallel turns. There is a wide range of pistes to explore, from skiing at the top of the Bellecôte Glacier, which at 3250m is the highest point in the whole area. We recommend the Mont Blanc piste, a beautiful long, winding and well-maintained run that runs all the way down to the Vanois Express Cable Car from the top of Dos Rond.
Experts in La Plagne
La Plagne is also known for its great opportunities for the skilled skier, and with many of the slopes located high up, it also means fantastic snow conditions, good off-piste – a true freeride paradise actually, if you know the area. Take the Crêtes lift into Le Biolley to experience the amazing powder snow. Or head up to the top of the north wing of the Bellecôte Glacier to try some of Europe’s most challenging off-piste. We recommend booking an experienced guide when exploring this challenging area of the mountain.
The Bellecôte Glacier is great for good skiing and snowboarding on piste. The trip from the top of the glacier down the black le Dérochoir piste provides thrill seekers with a bumpy and twisty ride as the piste is rarely groomed.
Snowboarding
For those just getting into snowboarding, there’s plenty of room to practice turns on the wide blue slopes. If you’re ready to try tricks and spins, head to the snowpark in Belle Plagne. There are different areas to suit all levels, including an airbag and a boardercross course. There are two halfpipes just above Plagne Bellecôte, ready to be explored – we recommend knowing your turns before you head down a halfpipe.
Glacier skiing
With an altitude of 3,250m, the ‘Glacier de la Chiaupe’ offers long red and blue runs and plenty of off-piste. Bellecôte Glacier, at 3,417m, is not groomed, so bring the right avalanche equipment in case of an accident or hire a guide. Or you can head over to Les Arcs and then up to Glacier du Varet, with its long, more challenging slopes – this is really good skiing.
Off-Piste in La Plagne
La Plagne has a very good reputation in the off-piste scene. The ski area is vast and a good part of it is untouched by the lift systems, resulting in fantastic powder when the snow hits. Verdon’s south side of Grand Rochette has a large open area that has plenty of fun terrain, while Montchavin has plenty of exciting tracks through the trees. If you’re up for a challenge, hike up the glacier to take one of the most famous tours on the north flank, the so-called “Couloir Canadian”.
Cross-country skiing in La Plagne
La Plagne offers 81 kilometers of cross-country ski trails across the different villages. There’s something for everyone, with different marked grades, green and blue to red and black, where you can really practice and perfect technique. The tracks are maintained for both classic and skate style cross-country skiing and the majority of the cross-country tracks are free – you mainly only have to pay if you take a lift here or there.
