Ski holidays to Sestriere
Sestriere ski resort in Italy, established in the 1930s, was among the very first ski destinations in the world created specifically for skiing. With its high-altitude ski village at 2,035 meters, Sestriere is known for excellent snow conditions and a ski area bubbling with adventure and fun on and off the slopes.
Sestriere as a ski area
Located west of Turin, Sestriere is the most famous ski resort in the seductively vast and unrivaled Via Lattea (Milky Way) ski area. The Via Lattea lift pass connects Sestriere with the neighboring villages of Sauze d’Oulx, Cesana-Sansicario, Claviere and Montgenèvre, which is across the border in France.
With 400 km of slopes throughout the area, it is Italy’s largest continuous ski area. There are 249 slopes throughout the area and 70 lifts. Over 1000 km of off-piste. The longest piste is 9 km long.
It’s an area that particularly appeals to more experienced skiers, as there are a lot of red slopes, and it’s an area that especially attracts groups that have been skiing a few times before, as there are a lot of restaurants and après-ski bars.
If you’re brand new to skiing, we recommend taking a ski school in this area for 2-3 days. Then you still have 3-4 good days where you can get up on the reds if you are quick to get control of your skis.
The snowpark in Sestriere is located right down to the town, there is a specific saucer lift that takes about 5 minutes up, and you also have a few different challenges in the form of jumps, rails and boxes.
Freeride in Sestriere
Sestriere is super famous for its off-piste and is great for getting off-piste and challenging yourself and the area.
Sestriere is famous for its three diverse freeride zones, namely Motta-Rognosa, Sises and Fraiteve. Each of these zones represents unique and challenging mountains that provide an adventurous experience, ranging from wide alpine areas to beautiful forest areas.
Motta-Rognosa
From the top of the lift, the wide alpine area opens up to the skier’s left, offering plenty of freeride opportunities. All routes lead easily back to the starting point. Further down the mountains, the larch forests come into play, offering idyllic scenery.
Great skiing in Motta begins behind Hotel Tana Delle Volpe. From here you head into Val Troncea and after a little effort you reach the bottom of the cable car near Club Med Pragelato. From here it’s easy to get back to the ski resort.
Sises
Sises offers super steep northern terrain, as well as some longer, easier descents on the sunny southern side, where you can either return back to town or continue all the way down to the SP215 road. If you go that way, be prepared to get a taxi or someone to pick you up.
Fraiteve
The peak of Monte Fraiteve dominates the Italian sector of the Via Lattea ski area. Everything on the eastern side of the main peak can lead back to Sestriere, but care must be taken when heading south as it will require skins, bus or taxi to get back to the village.
