Canada as a ski holiday destination

It’s fair to say that very few Danes have traveled to Canada to ski, I don’t think it’s because people underestimate Canada as a skiing destination. But the distance for skiing is simply too great and too expensive when opportunities to get good slopes are no further away than Austria and France.

However, there are about 10-15 good ski resorts in Canada and some of the destinations get an incredible amount of snow. The lift lines in Canada are also not very long, which makes it possible to ski a lot when you get there.

The nature in Canada is something else, and in many places you are not far from other natural areas that are incredibly beautiful.

But if you go to Canada, take 2 or 3 weeks to get the most out of the long trip, it usually takes 1-2 days just in travel time, and there is a lot to experience when you finally get there.

A great ski area in Canada

Whistler / Blackcomb – This is probably the area most Danes go to if they go to Canada to ski or snowboard, it is clearly the best ski resort in Canada. The lift system is well-functioning even though it’s all quite new. Snowminds has a number of Danish ski instructors over there.

As in the rest of Canada, there are great opportunities for off-piste skiing in delicious powder. There are over 30 lifts and over 200 kilometers of pistes. There is about 10 meters of snow throughout the year.

If you’re a snowboarder, the area is completely unit, both for experienced snowboarders and beginners. There is off-piste, parks, pipes, box jumps etc. There’s everything a snowboarder could wish for, plus there are plenty of snowboarders.

If you have time when you’re not on the mountain, Whistler / blackcom also has a lot to offer, there are many shops and restaurants where it is possible to get delicious food at good prices. It is possible to visit various clubs, bars and discos.

So if you’re going to Canada, I would definitely recommend everyone to go to Whistler, there is so much going on and the area is big enough to make 2-3 weeks go by easily. Plus, it’s voted the best ski resort in North America.

Another great ski area

Lake Louise is one of the larger areas in Canada as mentioned above, it is located alongside other ski areas and is among the Canadian Rocky Mountains. There is an incredible amount of snowfall during a season over there, I’ve read it’s up to 15 meters during the year.

There are about 100km of slopes in Lake Louise.

If you are an experienced skier, you will be ready to go to Lake Louise to go off-piste, if you are not off-piste yet, I would not recommend going to Canada actually. As you will get much more out of just going to France.
