Saalbach and Hinterglemm
Saalbach and Hinterglemm are household names in the ski world. These two Austrian villages offer exceptional skiing opportunities, from the beginner slopes right in the village center to the adrenaline-pumping black runs in the surrounding mountain landscape. With the connection to the Zell am See interconnected area and the City Xpress gondola, skiers can enjoy even more diverse terrain.
Beginners
Saalbach and Hinterglemm’s practice slope is right in the center of the village, making it easy for beginners to get started skiing. The local ski school is recognized for its quality and the friendly, English-speaking instructors are always ready to help, and it’s also possible to find Danish ski schools here.
In my personal experience, the best experience as a complete beginner on skis or snowboard is in Hinterglemm. This is clearly where most of the blue slopes are.
Taking the step from the beginner slope to the mountain is an easy transition after a few hours or 2-3 days. The gondolas from the village center to the mountain top make it easy to get around the area and the short blue runs at the top of Bernkogel are great for building confidence.
Slightly experienced
The Saalbach/Hinterglemm ski circuit, which includes Fieberbrunn, Bernkogel, Kohlmais and Reiterkogel, offers a wealth of long slopes, including red and blue, which are ideal for those with skiing experience.
The terrain at the top of Reiterkogel offers an excellent mix of big wide blue and red runs and it’s great to spend the morning skiing here. From here you can ski down to Pulvermacherscherm, which connects to Fieberbrunn, the latest resort to join the ski circuit – there are state-of-the-art and fast lifts here, though the runs are not as long over here.
Experienced skiers
For advanced skiers, Saalbach’s Schattberg offers a good selection of moguls and off-piste ski areas. Alternatively, experienced skiers will enjoy the challenging ‘Nordabfahrt’ piste.
In Hinterglemm, Zwölferkogel provides the biggest challenge for experienced skiers. Take the challenging World Cup black piste, which is challenging and free from large crowds. The nearby Seekar bowl offers excellent options, as does the Schattberg Nord descent in Saalbach, which is a long and challenging mix of black and red runs.
