Short description of Obertauern

The town of Obertauern is located at an altitude of 1630 meters, which is high for a ski town in Austria. Obertauern offers exceptional culinary experiences in the great restaurants in town and up on the mountain and exceptional skiing with evening skiing, a snowpark for those who love a bit of tricks and freestyle, and many opportunities for freeride off-piste when the snow lands. With several ski schools and ski shops with ski rentals, the area has the whole package – did we forget après-ski, there are of course many bars where you can get a little shit on. Obertauern is a unique ski area in Salzburgerland with an extra level of class. A ski area for everyone, inspiring both young and old – guests and locals, as well as gourmets and adrenaline-seeking skiers.

Every Monday and Thursday is evening skiing with lights on the slopes at the “Edelweissbahn” lift from 19:00 – 22:00, the slope is only 1.5 km but that’s the experience. If you have gone to Obertauern and want to give yourself an experience, then I think it is definitely something you should experience.

Obertauern for Kids

BOBBY LAND

Bobby, Obertauern’s beloved mascot, the little snow bunny, officially opened the new “Bobby Land” in December 2019. It is, of course, an area made for children, where families with smaller children have the opportunity to give a good introduction to skiing.

Bobby’s Monster Park

The little ones can look forward to “Bobby’s Monster Park” where fun characters and challenging facilities await them. A wave course and a course for slightly older children have been created. Here, children can experience a fun way to practice turns through the “Bobby’s Slalom” activity.

Further attractions include a children’s igloo and the ghost train at the ski adventure park at the Schaidbergbahn.

Tauern Round

The well-known and popular “Tauern round” now also offers two versions for children and young people. It is tailored to the skill level and physical fitness of young skiers.

Bobby Round

The “Bobby-Round”, named after Obertauern’s snow bunny mascot “Bobby”, offers a pleasant and interesting tour for the youngest skiers.

My Track Round

For the slightly older and more experienced children/young skiers, the “My Track” round is a bigger challenge.

When you’re ready to take the next step, you’ll find a wealth of wide, open blue runs to develop your skills on. Sonnenlift 1 and 3, as well as the Schaidbergbahn, offer longer, higher-lying blue runs that can be enjoyed with stunning views.

The good thing, of course, is that you won’t have to take the same lift or ski the same run twice.

Experienced skiers in Obertauern

Although Obertauern doesn’t have many black runs, the challenges available are truly impressive. Hop on the Gamsleiten 2 lift to experience some of the challenging slopes, like piste 26a. There are also excellent off-piste options that are not too extreme. You can test your endurance on the Super 7 tour, where you’ll ski to Obertauern’s seven highest points.

Snowboarding

Obertauern’s wide, open slopes are great for snowboarders of all levels. There are plenty of beginner-friendly slopes and a good selection of blue and red runs. The snowpark near the Kehkopfbahn lift has freestyle elements with kickers, rollers, pipes and boxes.

Obertauern off-piste and freeride destination

Obertauern is an outstanding off-piste ski destination that guarantees a royal off-piste experience for skiers of all levels. Although it’s not one of the highest ski resorts in the Alps, with the lifts peaking below 2,500m, it’s very safe in terms of snow.

Obertauern has earned a good reputation as a freeride destination for those who know about the area’s hidden gems. The longer tracks include the long descent to the nearby town of Untertauern. A freeride guide is needed for this trip as it’s a drive back. So pay a little for a freeride guide rather than go off on your own and do something stupid.
