- Are there children's activities if the weather is not suitable for skiing?
- Child-friendly hotel, ski chalet or apartment?
- Danish ski school with Danish ski instructor?
- Child guides, childcare?
- Child-friendly slopes?
- Food that appeals to children?
- Ski in / ski out, make sure the ski lodge, apartment or hotel is close to the children's slopes
Ski chalet, ski apartment or ski hotel?
When going on ski holidays with children, it's important to choose the right ski chalet, apartment or hotel. Depending on how many you're going, it may be worth choosing a larger log cabin for your family vacation in Norway or Sweden, which are great ski destinations with children, where there are many beautiful ski chalets located close to the slopes ski in - ski out or a few minutes from the slopes. We recommend you take a look at Hyttespecialisten.dk.
A ski apartment is typically found in the Alps in France, Austria or Italy. Make sure the apartment is of a size that you feel you can be there. There are several Danish families who own ski apartments in the Alps that have a nice size, you can search on Google by ski apartment and destination to see if there are any that match your needs.
Ski hotels are what we call luxury ski holidays are located in all destinations, and the biggest reason to choose to stay in a hotel during your ski vacation is that you don't necessarily have to cater for yourself. They are usually quite well located in areas relatively close to the slopes. Ski travel agencies run some of their own Danish ski hotels with child-friendly food, Danish ski school, entertainment when the slopes close and many other things that the other two options can't offer.
The price for hotel and service is also somewhat higher than if you rent a ski chalet or ski apartment from a private party on Airbnb, for example.
Child-friendly ski holidays by car, coach or plane?
It's hard to give you an exact answer, it depends on a lot of different things.
How old is your child/children? - If the child is 3-7 years old, we recommend going north where the transportation time is not so long. Either take the ferry from Hirtshals or Frederikshavn and thus spend some time on the ferry and only have to drive maybe 4-5 hours in total. You can drive or take the ferry from Zealand if you are from Funen or Zealand or drive up through Sweden.
If your children are a little older and have skied a few times and are looking for new challenges from the smaller destinations in Sweden and Norway, then you take the long trip south, which can either be by car or bus, where we're talking about 11-16 hours by car depending on whether it's Austria, Italy, Switzerland or France. The bus takes a little longer as you're traveling a lot and will therefore make some longer stops and drive slower.
If you choose to fly out on ski vacations, there's usually a 1-2 hour wait at the airport before you leave. The flight to the southern countries is around 3-4 hours - you typically fly from Aalborg Airport, Billund Airport or Kastrup Airport. Then you'll need transportation from the airport, which is between 1-2 hours, depending on which destination you choose and which airport you land at.
How many children should you bring? - Depending on how many people are going, you should of course think about how much equipment you need to bring from home. For example, if you have 2 adults and 3 children, it's an expensive ski trip if you choose to fly, airline tickets, hotel and food - if you're looking for a budget trip, this is not the way to go for a cheap ski trip. If, on the other hand, you're a single parent and want to take 1 child on ski holidays, then flights can make a lot of sense, as gas for 2 people quickly costs the same as plane tickets to the Alps.
How much luggage do you need to bring? - It's important to think about your luggage, if you all have your own ski equipment and don't need to rent ski equipment. Then it makes the most sense to pack your car or take the bus on ski holidays. Skis or snowboards cost between 300-600 DKK to bring on the plane per piece. If you're bringing your own boots, there's not much room in your luggage.
Want to travel together with other families, ski clubs or associations? If you're traveling on ski holidays as a larger group, it's most common to take the plane or drive in several cars. If you choose to travel by bus, there is of course a big saving for everyone if you can float the bus to some extent. The limitations then come in if you want to do something where you would need a car at the destination. However, remember that many of the ski destinations that are not so well connected have ski buses running around all the time.
What should ski holidays cost? - Is it a budget trip or does it not matter what the trip costs and you want to get there as quickly as possible, we have been aware that flying will make good sense in some cases and in others not. But if you are traveling 3-5 people then it makes sense to drive, if you are 1-2 people you might as well fly if it is south, if you are more than +20 people then it may make sense to look towards bus.
Are there more of you driving? - Here again, we're talking about whether you're going north or south. If you're a man to drive on ski holidays to the Alps, the trip can quickly become long, so you should consider staying overnight in Germany and get a few hours on your feet. Otherwise, you have to make the choice to go north.
What car do you have, do you have a car? - If you have a small car that doesn't have a lot of space in it, it might be a good idea to look into ski travel by bus or plane. Renting a car for ski holidays will quickly become expensive if you're only going to be away for a week.
Short weekend ski vacation, week ski holiday or 2 weeks? - If you're going on a short weekend ski trip, it's not worth driving to the Alps, you'll quickly spend almost 2 days on it. After 11-15 hours in the car, even if you drive when the ski day ends at 15:00 to go back to work the next day, you're completely exhausted. That's why we recommend flying if you're going to the Alps. One week, well then all options are open for what you've read above.
2 weeks as we have done several times before, just gives good opportunities if you have a car, you can visit 2 areas or more on the same trip, you can stay a little away from the ski resort and take the ski bus or car to the ski resort. See the sights in the area if you wish.
Which country is best for ski holidays with children?
It really depends on the age and age of your child/children. If it's your first time skiing, there's no need to choose top destinations like Hemsedal, Trysil, Sälen, Wagrain, Val Thorens, Canazei or Tignes. You won't get much out of the area, the price will be much higher than smaller areas.
Therefore, our recommendation is to look at Norway or Sweden, destinations with a smaller number of slopes. Here it will often be cheaper to stay and the lift pass will be at least 30-40% cheaper per person. In Norway, this would be destinations like Beitostølen, Gaustablikk or Rauland. In Sweden it could be Isaberg, Idre Fjäll or Vallåsen.
If you have children over 7-8 years old who have been skiing before, you can go to ski resorts in Austria - Maria Alm, Alpendorf, Dorfgastein. France - Valmorel & Alpe d'huez. Italy - Livigno or Passo Tonale. The transportation is somewhat longer and therefore we also recommend that the children are a little older.
Family-friendly ski area for young children
If you have toddlers who most likely haven't skied much, we definitely recommend heading north to our neighboring countries Norway or Sweden for this year's ski holidays. As they might be between 3-7 years old, it shouldn't be a problem to take them out of school or kindergarten for a week.
If it's possible for you, there's money to be saved in the weeks outside the peak ski season, there's more space on the slopes - more space on the slopes means that your children will get much more out of the ski holidays.
If you're warming up for a ski vacation, we recommend taking a ski weekend to Isaberg or Vallåsen, which are close to Copenhagen. They're perfect destinations to learn how to ski, so you won't have too many days, but you can get a feel for it. You can also take a week later in the season to the larger ski areas.
Should children wear ski helmets?
It goes without saying that children should wear helmets - at least if you want to keep your child safe. You as a parent should of course be a role model for your child and wear a ski helmet just like your child. The question can and may be asked why someone else is allowed to go without a ski helmet. We've heard of horrific injuries such as skull fractures, where in the worst cases, the injuries last a lifetime.
Several ski destinations in Norway and Sweden offer free lift passes for children under a certain age as long as they wear a ski helmet. In Austria and Italy, you must be 16 or over to not wear a helmet, but even if you are 16 or over it is not recommended to ski or snowboard without a helmet.
Most ski schools also require children attending ski school to wear helmets.
What equipment should you bring on ski holidays with kids? - packing list
We've created the ultimate ski vacation packing list, where we've written down everything you could possibly need during a ski holiday. Download it, print it out, start packing 1-2 weeks before you leave - so you don't end up 1-2 days before and can't get the important things you need. It's completely free and it's sure to contain a few things or 5 that you would have forgotten in the rush of packing for ski holidays.
Who sells cheap ski holidays with kids?
Several Danish ski travel agencies sell ski trips for families with children with great discounts. If you want to grab those extra cheap places during the good weeks 6-7-8-9-10 and Easter, you should make use of the book early discount. Book your family ski vacation early, before the season starts in July, August or September. During these months, it's important for travel agents to book as many ski trips as possible so that they can fill up their order books, book flights and more. This makes planning for the season easier for them and you save money by booking well in advance, as well as giving you a greater choice of accommodation such as rooms, hotels and destinations.
If you have the opportunity to travel outside the big weeks of the ski season, you can save a lot of money. However, you will need to make sure you take your child out of school, which is usually not a problem. Ski holidays with children in week 7 and week 8 are = with winter holidays, therefore prices are also a lot higher in these weeks, the slopes are more crowded.
Several ski resorts in Norway, Sweden and Italy offer free lift passes for children under a certain age. As long as they wear a ski helmet. If you're looking at privately owned ski lodges or ski apartments, it might be a good idea to check this out.
Ski holidays with children, with a ski club?
Several ski clubs around Denmark have planned these family ski trips where you have the opportunity to get away with other families. As you're traveling with a club and not just a travel agency, you have the opportunity to get even closer to each other as you'll quickly feel part of something - unlike a week with a ski travel agency. You can see all the ski clubs around Denmark here and read more about the simple ones.
Skiklubben Hareskov is by far the largest ski club in Denmark, with over 3000 members they offer ski trips at great prices and specific categories to suit who you are. Since we're talking family ski holidays, we recommend you take a look at their family ski club trips. They have trips for families with toddlers, 3-5 years. Schoolchildren 6-12 years. Teenage families, 13-17 years.
